How much battery and data will Onside use?

Find out what to expect regarding battery and data usage.

The Onside app has been designed so that it won’t slow you down.

We know that your phone is an essential tool and, if you're like us, you probably use quite a few apps throughout your day. Every app uses some battery and processing power which can slow your phone down. That’s why, when designing the Onside app, we were careful to ensure it was as battery and data efficient as possible.

Battery

During an average working day Onside will use around 5% of your battery. The app mainly uses power when you have it open, so if you use it a lot in a day you might expect slightly more, and if you don’t use it much, it will use less.

Data

To download the Onside app, between 40 - 90 megabytes (MB) will be used, depending on if you're an Android user or an iPhone user. If you are concerned about this, we suggest you do the initial download while you are connected to WiFi.

After that, checking in/out of a property you've visited before will use on average around 150-200KB for each visit.

Checking in/out of a new property will use more data, but how much depends on what the property has set up, such as risk images and their quality.

A property with no risks could use 200KB, whereas a property with a dozen risks and 5 have risk images attached, it would be closer to 5MB of data to check-in/out the first time.

So, to put that into context, if you have a 2GB data plan and check-in to 5 properties you've visited before, every day for a month, Onside will use around 20MB per month, which is 1% of your monthly data allocation.

Auto-Arrival

The Auto-arrival feature available to all Onside users (more info here), does not use your data. Instead, it relies on cellphone signal to determine if you have crossed an Onside boundary or not.
